In 2007, Daylight Savings Time will expand. Are your systems ready?
Towson, MD — January 4, 2007 —
In an attempt to reduce energy consumption, the US Congress announced plans for Daylight Savings Time (DST) changes. This means that, in 2007:
- DST will "spring forward" one hour on Sunday, March 11 - three weeks earlier than the traditional date.
- Time will also "fall back" one hour into Standard Time on Sunday, November 4 - one week later than
the traditional date.
Depending on the complexities of your business, the new DST transition could involve a great deal of work.
So, you need to ask yourself the following questions about your business:
- Who is planning to patch and verify the US Government's date changes to the start and end time of the new DST in 2007?
- Do you have time to patch and verify more than just the most critical systems?
- Does your staff have enough time to perform this extra functional testing?
- When will your inventory of systems be complete?
It is important to plan now so you have enough time to address these issues, evaluate the impact,
make the appropriate upgrades, patches or coding changes, and verify that they work successfully.
Ajilon Consulting is ready to help you do what you need to succeed.
Our three-phase DST transition program is supported by research and experience combining our expert approach,
methods, resources and agility to reduce or eliminate any risks associated with the DST transition and its impact on your business:
- Phase I - Inventory Applications
Our IT experts inventory all applications, leveraging old Y2K inventories, and updating them by:
- Categorizing and prioritizing applications by business criticality and application type, such as stand-alone systems and interfaces to other systems.
- Identifying what operating system applications are currently on and planning any migration schedule.
- Documenting inventory in a Findings and Recommendation (F&R) Report:
- The F&R Report includes a sizing and level of effort required to upgrade, patch, fix, and test applications.
- Before execution, we consult with you to decide the priority for patching and testing applications according to budget and risk tolerances.
- Phase II - OS Upgrade
We can help you plan for and apply either operating system upgrades or patches to critical applications first, including managing or performing required custom code changes.
- Phase III - System Testing
We will work with you to test all applications required, based on the Ajilon F&R Report:
- Standard testing best practices are followed and test artifacts serve as an audit record for you to validate what level of testing is accomplished.
- Test artifacts include: Test Strategy/Plan, Test Cases, Test Scripts, Defect Reports, Test Status, and Final Test Results.
How will the new DST impact your IT systems?
If your business uses hardware or software that is sensitive to date and time transactions or utilizes and interacts with local time zones,
they may be impacted by the DST change.
How can you prepare for the DST change?
Any electronic device that uses time, or has a calendar function, will need to be patched or upgraded to prevent disruption.
Patches will be available for currently supported operating systems, but for older operating systems some patches will be available
only on the Internet or may not have any official patches available at all.
Will your systems pass the DST test?
Each date/time-sensitive system must be tested to ensure it can successfully handle the new DST change, including network devices,
routers, switches and some alarm panels.
Helping your operating systems stay ahead of the times.
The new DST goes into effect in March 2007, but you don't need to go through Y2K all over again.
We can help you save time and avoid other potential problems that could impact your company.
